Rosalind Hodges
I have lived in the Western Algarve with my family since 2004, drawn here by the varied landscapes, ecological beauty and endearing climate – elements which form the natural backdrop to my artwork.
Our move to Portugal has also given me more time for my family. Our youngest daughter was born here in late 2004 and her older sister now attends a Steiner Kindergarten near Lagos where I am actively involved in establishing a follow-on primary school (due to open in 2008).
As an artist, I feel it is essential for me to evolve and develop. Accordingly, I compliment my painting in the Algarve with annual workshops run by Emily Ball at the Rackham, School of Contemporary Art in Sussex. There, I immerse myself in a flow of creative energy with other professional artists. The courses give me fresh insight into my work, leaving me feeling invigorated and inspired.
Before moving to Portugal, I exhibited my artwork and received commissions at my studio in West Sussex. I also ran my own wedding stationery and greetings-card design company, creating original watercolour art for bespoke stationery. In 2003, I was commissioned by Thornton’s Chocolates to design a range of cards for their shops and website.
My career in art began in fashion in 1994, in the design studios of Ben de Lisi in London and later, with Caroline Charles, having previously studied at The London College of Fashion.
WORKING WITH THE WILD ELEMENTS OF NATURE
Painting for me combines my love of nature with my passion for art. The inspiration for my work comes from journeys spent exploring remote tracks, discovering deserted beaches and stumbling upon abandoned farm houses. I am absorbed by the intensity of natural colours and their form. I am enchanted by the atmosphere created at dusk, when subtle light dusts the landscapes and wild flowers fill the air with intoxicating perfumes. These captivating moments propel me into a whirlwind of creativity.
While painting I follow my intuition, allowing the texture of the oils to create the landscape and form the composition, creating a richness and depth in my work. My paintings are intended to engage the beholder in a journey of their imagination, while time, just for a moment, stands still.
